Writing for the School Newspaper
In discovering my new love for writing, I decided to take a newspaper course second semester of my freshman year.  I strived to impress people with my writing skills in order to make up for my grades in my math and science courses.  However, the class didn't guarantee your articles would be published in the paper.  In discovering this, I set out to create something unique that no had done before me.  I began to develop a column called "Holly's Hot Spots", which highlighted fun and exciting places for high school students to go.  I went to these places and reviewed them in the column.  My newspaper teacher enjoyed the concept, and allowed me publish one of my columns in the newspaper.  The column ended up getting great feedback from students and I was given the opportunity to have my hot spots showcased in each edition of the paper.  One of my reviews was even placed in one of the windows of a store I reviewed!  I ended up leaving the newspaper my sophomore year because of scheduling conflicts with rehearsals for theatre productions.  However, the column continued with different students listing their very own hot spots every semester.  It was a really fun accomplishment in writing for me because it started a tradition and this accomplishment helped encourage me to continue writing throughout high school.
